Updated Site Names Guidance
In a recent blog post, Google announced that it has improved its site names system to ensure more accurate selections in search results.
The feature was initially launched in May and was limited to mobile devices and a few languages. However, it has now been expanded to support all devices and languages.
Google’s aim with this update is to enhance the overall search experience for users.
To suggest a preferred site name, Google recommends using WebSite structured data, as specified in the site name documentation.
The updated documentation now emphasizes the use of the alternateName property, especially when a preferred site name is unavailable or when two globally oriented sites share the same name.
Workaround For Unavailable Site Names
If a preferred or alternative site name is not selected, Google suggests providing a domain or subdomain name as a site name.
Before implementing this workaround, it is important to ensure that preferred and secondary names are provided via WebSite structured data and supported by other sources on your homepage.
Internal Pages Issue
Google is aware of an issue where the site name displayed on a homepage may differ from that of other pages on the same site.
An update is in the works to address this concern, and Google assures users that the preferred site name on the homepage will ultimately be displayed on all internal pages.
Google Encourages User Feedback
Google plans to extend site name support to all languages worldwide. If you have any queries or concerns, Google encourages you to engage with the Search Central help community.
The expansion of languages and devices means that your site has a greater potential reach. The improved site names system enhances the search experience for users and makes it easier for them to find your site. The suggested workaround for unselected site names can be especially helpful in certain scenarios.
