In the aftermath of recent Reddit blackouts, top executives at Google have acknowledged user dissatisfaction with the current search experience, as reported by CNBC.
In response to this feedback, Google has taken steps to enhance its search engine results. The latest addition is the introduction of the “Perspectives” feature, designed to provide searchers with more comprehensive answers.
Perspectives leverages content from various platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, and Quora, including forum discussions and videos. By incorporating content from a wider range of sources, Google aims to improve the quality and breadth of information received by searchers.
However, it remains uncertain whether this new feature adequately addresses user concerns regarding Google Search.
The Impact of the Reddit Blackout on Google Search
Historically, Google searchers have used the term “Reddit” as a way to find valuable resources on specific topics.
Unfortunately, the effectiveness of this tactic was compromised when numerous Reddit forums went offline earlier this month.
Moderators of popular forums made their pages private as part of a widespread protest against Reddit’s decision to charge developers for data access.
During a company-wide meeting, Google executives, including Prabhakar Raghavan (Google’s head of search) and Sundar Pichai (the CEO), acknowledged the issue.
Raghavan acknowledged user unhappiness, emphasized the importance of user satisfaction, and addressed an employee’s comment on negative feedback related to excessive advertisements and irrelevant results.
Pichai believes that users are seeking “more comprehensive answers” and often append the names of forum sites like Reddit to their search queries.
According to him, people prioritize comprehensive solutions over traditional “blue links”.
Google’s Approach to Improving Search
One of Google’s key initiatives to enhance search results is the introduction of the “Perspectives” feature.
Raghavan suggested that Perspectives could potentially offer better results without requiring users to explicitly include “Reddit” in their search queries.
However, Google recognizes that solving the search quality issue is not as simple as implementing Perspectives or relying more on AI.
While Google has made significant advances in generative AI, launching a ChatGPT competitor called Bard and working on a project known as the Search Generative Experience, executives admit that AI alone cannot improve search quality.
The Future of Google Search
While Perspectives is one of the measures taken by Google to address the problem of surfacing authentic discussions and comprehensive answers, it is not the sole solution.
Lara Levin, a Google spokeswoman, informed CNBC that search “satisfies the overwhelming majority of user needs”, and Google is continuously enhancing Search to meet evolving user requirements.
She added that features like the Perspectives filter are part of Google’s commitment to ensuring that users find the most helpful information across various sources and formats.
Despite these efforts, there are those who argue that Google should prioritize making traditional search results more helpful, as these results have been instrumental in shaping Google’s prominence today.
