Google’s New Search Generative Experience: What You Need to Know
If you’re looking to take your Google searches to the next level, you might want to try out the new Google Search Generative Experience (SGE). This innovative tool adds generative AI capabilities to Google Search results, providing users with a unique, AI-powered search experience.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the SGE on desktop and mobile. We’ll also compare SGE results to typical Google SERP features, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
How To Get Access To Google SGE Via Search Labs
So how can you start using SGE? First, you’ll need to join the Search Labs waitlist. This will give you access to a range of experimental features, including SGE, Code Tips, and Add To Sheets.
To join the waitlist, simply sign up and wait for an email or notification from Google. Once you’re in, you can access SGE on the Search Labs page and start enjoying its advanced AI-powered search features.
SGE For Desktop & Mobile Users
Once you’re up and running, you’ll be able to experience SGE on both desktop and mobile devices. On desktop, you’ll see AI conversation prompts below the search bar. Meanwhile, mobile users will find the Converse option under the search bar, leading to a screen with prompts to start your SGE conversation.
So how do SGE results compare to standard SERP features? Let’s take a closer look.
SGE For Different Types Of SERPs
We’ll cover a few different types of SERPs to give you an idea of how SGE performs in various contexts.
1. SERPs With FAQ, People Also Ask, & Knowledge Panel Features
Let’s start with a simple question: What is Google Bard? When we asked this question using SGE, we got an answer that drew on six different sources of information. Beneath the generative AI response, we could see the standard Google search results, including organic search results, people also ask, and a knowledge panel.
Note that while Add to Sheets is available in Search Labs, it only works on organic search results – not AI-powered answers.
2. SERPs With The Local Pack Feature
If you’re looking for local recommendations, SGE can help here too. When we asked about the top Italian restaurants in Phoenix, SGE provided a response similar to the local pack. However, the top three restaurants recommended by SGE differed slightly from those shown by the local pack on the desktop browser.
3. SERPs With Sitelinks
When looking for specific information, SGE can generate precise details, followed by reviews and purchasing options. We tried this out when searching for Semrush, and were provided with useful information about the product.
4. SERPs With Shopping & Reviews
If you’re looking to purchase a product, SGE can provide advice on what to look for, as well as shopping results with reviews. This is useful when you’re looking for a 4k camcorder under $500, for example.
5. SERPs With Product Details & Store Listings
When inquiring about a specific feature of a product, SGE can provide you with precise details, followed by reviews and purchasing options.
6. SERPs With Sponsored Ads & Featured Snippets
If you’re looking for a broad topic, such as link building, SGE can provide useful definitions based on multiple sources.
7. News And Top Stories
If you’re looking for the latest news, SGE can draw on recent news sources to provide you with the most up-to-date information.
8. SERPs With Images
When you’re looking for visuals, SGE can provide definitions and guidelines for using images from around the web.
9. SERPs With Video
Need to learn how to fix something? SGE can draw on video sources to provide assistance with specific tasks.
10. SERPs With Events
Looking for events in your area? SGE can generate a list of upcoming events from various sources.
11. Code Tips
Finally, for those looking for coding assistance, SGE can even provide useful tips and advice through Code Tips.
